Renowned legal expert, Professor Makau Mutua, has given a rare opinion on the opposition leader best suited to beat President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In his popular newspaper column, Mutua stated that Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka was the safest bet among the opposition leaders that are angling to replace the current president in 2017.
“I will tell you why Kalonzo, not any of the CORD co-principals, or Amani’s Musalia Mudavadi may be the one,” Mutua wrote.
The columnist started by pointing out that Musyoka was a self-made politician who stands apart from his competitors such as President Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, and Mudavadi – all sons of prominent political families.
Mutua further opined that the Wiper leader had a rare virtue in honesty, adding that such a trait places him ahead of his political competitors.
“Kalonzo is one of the most honest politicians in Kenya. You will notice I didn’t say he is one of the most honest people in Kenya. I have compared him to politicians, and that says a lot because Kenyan politicians are a lying bunch,” the lawyer observed.
The US-based human rights activist further stated that Musyoka’s presidential bid would benefit from his Kamba ethnicity given that there is a need to rotate the presidency across the 42 tribes in the country.
Other traits that Mutua mentioned in his praise of Musyoka included the Wiper leader’s likeability, especially from the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities, combined with his expertise in diplomacy.
Mutua is regarded as one of the most notable critics of the Jubilee administration and has for long been perceived to be supportive of Odinga’s presidential ambitions.
