Raila Gives Uhuru 8 Days to Review Controversial Election Laws

ODM leader Raila Odinga has given President Uhuru Kenyatta eight days to review the controversial electoral laws that were passed last week in the National Assembly.

The Electoral laws, which were passed by Jubilee legislators, allow the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to use the manual system in case the technology one fails in 2017 Elections.

Speaking during a public forum in Bondo, Odinga announced that they will resume streets protests on January 4, 2017 unless Jubilee honours the report presented to the National Assembly by the joint select committee.

“The Opposition has given Jubilee government eight day to sort out the controversial Elections Act and regulations guiding a peaceful and transparent election in 2017. We will not settle for anything less after the days elapse but to lead our supporters to the streets,” the Former Prime Minister affirmed.

The Opposition leader claimed that Jubilee was planning to tamper with results during the upcoming General Election and urged senators to engage in sober debate when the laws were taken to parliament.

“I hope that senators will engage reason in their debate and put the interest of the common wananchi at heart. We need to negotiate on the electoral laws as a way of uniting the country ahead of the general election,” Mr Odinga stated.

Meanwhile, there was drama in parliament last week after ODM MPs walked out during a special sitting that was convened by the speaker Justin Muturi to discuss the Election laws.

While the Opposition MPs opted to walk out, Jubilee legislators remained in parliament and passed the laws.
