Raila Odinga's Car Smashed in Kakamega County

The windscreen of a vehicle carrying Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga was on Friday smashed after riots erupted during a tour of Kakamega County.

Odinga found himself in trouble after he tried to address residents of Mumias East but a section of Jubilee supporters led by area MP Benjamin Washiali protested the move.

He had visited Shibale village where there was an ongoing meeting between leaders and residents to discuss police brutality witnessed in the area.

Earlier in the week, General Service Unit (GSU) officers are said to have attacked and brutally injured residents in an operation to recover rifles stolen from Booker Police Station.

He was however, met with rejection after supporters of Washiali accused the CORD leader of trying to politicise the matter asking him to keep off.

The situation turned chaotic when Odinga's supporters responded with the two groups attacking each other with stones, destroying a public address system to prevent Odinga from making his speech.

Mr Odinga was accompanied by Governor Wycliffe Oparanya as they visited the County for a meeting of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) aspirants and delegates.

The MP is one of the Western region leaders who have openly supported the government and even vowed to lead a revolt to wrestle the Opposition stronghold from the CORD coalition.

This comes just a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta toured neighbouring Bungoma County during the inaugural graduation ceremony of Kibabii University where he is the Chancellor.

The visit by the two national leaders had excited area residents who expressed hope that development projects would be launched in the area.
