Raila Vows to Stop Paying Taxes After Nakissery’s Threat to Sack Chiefs Siding with Opposition

ODM leader Raila Odinga has warned that he will mobilise Kenyans to stop paying taxes following a threat issued to chiefs by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

On Thursday, Mr Nkaissery said that he would sack all chiefs siding with the Opposition in the voter registration exercise adding that they had no business being in government.

Speaking at Nyandiwa Trading Centre in Homa Bay County on Friday, Odinga announced that he would proceed with the warning if the threat is not withdrawn by the Jubilee administration.

“The State administrators ought to serve everybody regardless of their party affiliation because the officers are paid with tax payer’s money,” the former premier affirmed.

The Opposition leader stated that Chiefs should be allowed to perform their duties without intimidation as they help other Kenyans participate in their democratic right of voting.

Nkaissery’s statement had also been criticised by ODM communications director Philip Etale, terming his sentiments "outdated".

"Such reckless statements are not only outdated and backward but also jeopardise the gains Kenya has made over the years in terms of democracy," Etale said.

Leaders allied both to CORD and Jubilee have been moving across the country in areas perceived to be key strongholds mobilising the electorate to register in large numbers.
