The National Parents Association on Wednesday told Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to reintroduce caning in schools.
Speaking in Nairobi, Mr David Maiyo, who is the head of the parents association, stated that lack of caning had made children become more indiscipline.
“We want caning brought back to schools. Spare the rod and spoil the child,” Mr Maiyo affirmed.
Other parents and head teachers concurred with Mr Maiyo stating that corporal punishment was one of the best ways of instilling discipline among students.
The government banned caning in schools 3 years ago after new regulations were implemented and warned of dire consequences for teachers who would go against the order.
According to section 36 (1) of the basic education act 2013, “No pupil shall be subjected to torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, in any manner, whether physical or psychological.”
Meanwhile, Matiang'i on Tuesday warned principals against hiking school fees as students prepare to resume learning in January.
While announcing the Form One selection results at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in Nairobi, Matiang'i requested parents to report school principals who would demand more money than the standard package set out by the government.
“If any parent pays a shilling more in school fees, then the Principal should be reported,” Matiang'i stated.
In March 2015, the government gazetted regulations that set boarding school fees at Sh53,554 per year, day schools at Sh9,374 per year and Sh37,210 annually for special schools.
