The late Governor Nderitu Gachagua's health problems worsened when Nyeri Members of County Assembly (MCAs) moved an impeachment motion against him – his brother Mr Rigathi Gachagua has revealed.
Addressing mourners during the late Governor's burial in Mathira, Nyeri County, Mr Rigathi disclosed that in September last year, his brother was booked for a serious chemotherapy in London but declined to go because he was supposed to appear in the Senate and defend himself against the motion.
"My brother's problems began in September 2016 after he refused to attend a chemotherapy in London because of the impeachment motion.
"The day he was supposed to fly to London... he appeared before the senate to defend his name against the doctors wish," the Governor's brother stated.
He added that even the doctors in London refused to take him back after he failed to appear for the session.
It was after he (Rigathi) travelled to the UK and pleaded with the doctors that they accepted to take him back.
64-year old Gachagua passed on two weeks ago at a London hospital where he was being treated for pancreatic cancer.
His body was brought to the country on Thursday, February 24, to an emotional reception at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
His burial, which is happening today, has been attended by top dignitaries in the country, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as well as governors, senators, MPs and other leaders.
