Ruto Now Risks Jail Term

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto risks facing a six-month jail term over contempt of court, after he allegedly missed to appear before the Employment and Labour Relations court on Wednesday.

The County Boss was supposed to appear in court over a case in which he is accused of failing to pay county workers.

Governor Ruto alongside three senior County Officials were implicated in the case filed by 287 county employees.

The workers accused Ruto and his officers of failing to honour a court order issued in December, directing them to release the workers’ November salaries within seven days.

Justice Njagi Marete, issued fresh summons to Ruto and directed him to appear before the court or face a six-month civil jail term.

According to the judge, this is the second time the County boss has failed to honour a Court directive.

In December, last year, Judge Marete ordered the Bomet County Government to pay the workers who had sued them through the Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) on December 8.

KCGWU, however, moved back to court on January 28 after the county government failed to honour the order by Justice Marete.

The County has denied claims that it disobeyed court orders, adding that no employee had either been struck off the payroll or relieved of their duties as claimed by the applicants.

Governor Ruto is charged alongside acting County Secretary Kilelson Mutai, County Human Resource Director Ann Turgut and Payroll Manager Moses Rono.
