Securities Exchange and Courts Close in Historic POTUS Visit

Despite a statement by U.S. Ambassador to Kenya- Robert Godec that there will be minimal disruptions of activities in Nairobi during US President Barack Obama’s visit- more and more of the city’s operations have been brought to a standstill.

Traders are set to count losses as the Nairobi Stock Exchange closes today at noon- hours earlier than the normal closing time, according to The Nation.

The bourse released a statement reading  “We wish to inform you that the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) will today (Friday, July 24, 2015) vary its trading hours due to President Barack Obama’s visit.”

At the same time, activities at Milimani Law Courts have been put off till Monday.

The court gave a statement signed by Chief Magistrate D.O. Ogembo to the effect, Citizen News reports.

The notice reads- Take notice that Milimani Law Court shall remain closed on Friday 24th – 7 – 015.Duties shall, however, resume on Monday 27th – 7 – 015.”

Both the court and NSE have stated their reason for the change in activities as the anticipated traffic disruptions, following an announcement by the government on roads that will be closed following Obama’s visit.

Other businesses and offices in Nairobi and its environs have been shut down, due to logistics surrounding the visit.

This is despite the government announcement that Friday is not a public holiday.

Obama arrives in the country today and is expected to leave on Sunday.
