Senator Joins Protesters in Destroying Crops on Misused Land

Drama was witnessed in Ikolomani, Kakamega County on Sunday, after the region's senator, Bonny Khalwale led residents in destroying crops planted at the Shibwe Subcounty Hospital.

The senator and the protesting residents claim that the land was meant for the expansion of the hospital yet the management had leased it out to some individuals who were planting crops on it.

According to The Star Newspaper, Khalwale claims that during his term as area Member of Parliament, the community had given out the land for the purposes of the construction of staff houses, maternity and surgical wards, a theatre and a high rise building for medical students.

The senator gave the hospital's management a seven day ultimatum to sort out the matter.

Area governor Wycliffe Oparanya however condemned the incident, saying the senator had no jurisdiction over the matter.

Some beneficiaries working at the hospital, have since come out to dismiss Khalwale's allegations saying the crops belong to the hospital's welfare group.
