Senators to Fight Moses Kuria for their Jobs

The Senate is bracing itself for another showdown with the National Assembly, after Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria began a referendum push to reduce Kenya's representatives.

Senators have now vowed to oppose Kuria's move which seeks to scrap off the Senate, claiming that it was meant to kill Devolution and would open avenues for mutilation of the constitution.

Led by Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are, the lawmakers dared Kuria to go ahead with his agenda promising that it would never see the light of day.

“Let him bring on the referendum to remove the Senate. In the same vein he should include a clause for Kenyans to choose between the Senate and the National Assembly. I am sure Kenyans are knowledgeable enough to know the National Assembly is not doing its work well unlike us,” he said.

These sentiments were supported by Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe, who said that the Senate had a role to check on the excesses of the National Assembly.

"We need the Senate to check on the excesses of the National Assembly. It is not only the Executive that can become dictatorial, the Legislature can also become dictatorial that is why there is need for a checking system. That is the work of the Senate," said Mr Kagwe.

Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior and nominated Senator Martha Wangari shared in the same remarks.

Kuria has surprisingly gained support from Kenyans with similiar opinion, of doing away with the Senate and Women Representative positions while also reducing the Members of Parliament to 200.
