Senior KWS Officer Killed During Shootout in Tsavo East National Park

A senior Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer was on Friday night shot dead in Galana Kulalu near the Tsavo East National Park.

The officer was killed when a fierce gun battle erupted between wildlife rangers and poachers.

One ranger, who was injured in the process, was airlifted to St Joseph Shelter of Hope Hospital in Voi, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Four poachers were gunned down during the exchange.

Confirming the incident, KWS Corporate Communication Manager Paul Udoto stated that one AK47 rifle and 28 bullets were recovered after the gunfight.

"A manhunt is currently underway after a shootout with the suspects in the Tsavo East National Park," Udoto said in a statement.

Voi police boss Joseph Chesire added that one of the two suspected poachers, currently on the run, sustained serious gunshot wounds.

According to Mr Cherise, the suspects stole the firearm of the slain senior officer.
