This Social Media Message 'Brought Down' Chase Bank

The message which went viral on social media warning Kenyans of an imminent collapse of Chase Bank Limited, has partly proved itself true even after the bank dismissed it as 'rumours'.

A section of Kenyans went ahead to believe the information which stated that the bank was unstable and promptly withdrew their money, while some customers bought the bank's statement which dismissed the social media reports as inaccurate.

“We would like to assure our customers and partners that Chase Bank is a strong, sound and transparent institution that has operated in Kenya for the last 20 years,” the bank's statement read in part.

However, days after the warning message made its way to WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) on Thursday announced that Chase Bank had been placed under receivership.

CBK Governor Partrick Njoroge even went ahead to blame the social media reports for the situation the bank found itself in.

While addressing the media, Mr Njoroge stated that the alarm raised on social media led customers to withdrawing huge amounts from the bank before Thursday, making it difficult for Chase Bank to meet its financial obligation by 6th April 2016.

On Thursday morning, panic engulfed customers who still had money in their account, as they desperately rushed to ATMs and bank branches to withdraw but were disappointed to find them closed.
