#SomeOneTellBBCAfrica and Other Kenyan Trends on January 21, 2017

A majority of Kenyans on Saturday took to social media to weigh in on some of the trending topics under different hashtags including:

1. #SomeOneTellBBCAfrica

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) was the subject of discussion following tweets regarding deportation of Kenyans living in the United States.

BBC Africa on Friday posted: “Could Kenyans illegally in the US be deported? Could Trump back Biafra? Africa's hopes and fears as Trump takes over.”

Hours later, the same media house asked: “Will Kenyans be deported in Trump's America?”

The two tweets immediately sparked anger among Kenyan netizens who wondered why BBC directed the deportation remarks on Kenyans alone yet the United States has immigrants from different countries across the globe.

Many condemned the media outlet accusing it of partial reporting meant to tarnish the image of the country.

The enraged online fraternity used the hashtag #SomeOneTellBBCAfrica to send hilarious and even abusive tweets directed to the London-based media house.

Most of them complained of other instances when international channels had published content they claimed was demeaning to Kenya.

Here are the tweets:

2. #HudumaMashinaniEmbu

Huduma Kenya on Saturday took its services to Embu county to sensitise the residents on different government programs including the ongoing voter registration.

3. Wafula Chebukati

The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was still being discussed by Kenyans who gave varying comments regarding his appointment.

Most expressed hope that the new boss and his commissioners would deliver credible results in the August 8 polls.
