Sonko to Quit Nairobi Gubernatorial Race Only if Voters Say So

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has responded to calls that he ought to withdraw from the city's gubernatorial race and instead back another candidate.

Sonko stated that he would only step away from the race if Nairobi residents tell him to do so but not out of pressure from other individuals.

The Senator emphasised that he would not heed to calls by politicians asking him to drop his gubernatorial bid in support of other candidates who he did not reveal.

According to the Senator, some of the leaders who have expressed interest in the seat had not been helpful to the City, therefore, were not fit to be elected.

"We have people, wananchi do not want, people who have done nothing yet some want them to lead. That is wrong and we will not accept it," he said.

Sonko who leads “Team Nairobi” faction has been opposing the entry of former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth who declared interest in the Nairobi Governor's seat on a Jubilee ticket.

At the same time, the Nairobi Senator accused Starehe lawmaker Maina Kamanda of issuing threats to aspirants who are opposed to Kenneth's bid.

“Kamanda is threatening governor, MP and MCA aspirants. He is saying that if you do not join the camp supporting Kenneth's bid, you will not get the Jubilee ticket,” he claimed.

On Monday, Team Nairobi, which also consists of former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti South) and Johnson Sakaja (nominated) announced that it had agreed on a candidate to face incumbent Evans Kidero.

The team, through Waweru, told Kenyans.co.ke that it would unveil its candidate soon.
