Students Burn Illicit Brewery after Teacher Dies While Drinking

Drama ensued when angry teachers and villagers stormed to an illicit brewer’s den and set it ablaze in Daiga division, Laikipia East sub-county.

The incensed mob was protesting the death of a teacher, suspected to have been as a result of the illicit drink.

The deceased, 46- year-old Vincent Maina Gichohi is said to have been in good health on Friday when after classes, he left school.

He did not go home that evening and on Saturday morning his body was discovered, dragged and dumped about 50 meters away from the illicit brewer’s home which doubled up as his place of business.

Gichohi is suspected to have died in the den, which is about 200 meters from Kalalu Secondary School, where he had been teaching before the unfortunate incident.

The brewer had not reported the incident to the police.

Speaking to The Nation, Area Chief Wangombe Wanjau confirmed the two incidents and said that the police got to the place in time to save the brewer from being lynched by the mob baying for his blood.

The body of the teacher was taken to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

In the meantime, the suspect remains in custody as police investigate the matter.
