Students Walk 20KM to Bring Teacher's Body Home

A group of students in Embu County on Saturday walked for 20 Kilometres, in a bid to raise Sh5.3 Million for their teacher who passed on while undergoing treatment in India.

The students from Siakago Girls High School and their Principal Lucy Muthoni, walked from their school in Mbeere North Sub County to Embu town, in an event attended by area MP Charles Njagagua.

Muthoni said that the school decided to have a charity walk to look for sponsors and well-wishers to help raise funds because they did not raise enough funds while at school.

“The teachers, school staff and students  devised  several methods to raise funds such as  contributions, selling doughnuts, biscuits and T-shirts but  we did not raise enough money that’s why we decided to take a charity walk to help bring back our teacher's body,” Muthoni was quoted by the Star.

Robert Kihara Maina, had been a teacher for over 19 years and was suffering from a rare cancer and kidney disease.

Mr Maina went to India for special treatment where he died, leaving an accumulated hospital bill that prompted his family to seek help in order to transport his body back home.

The area MP urged the County and National Governments to support the family. The Legislator further challenged the Government to equip hospitals and hire skilled labor for special treatments, to allow patients access quality treatment locally.
