Terrorists Knew Dead Students, Garissa University Leader Reveals

The Court on Tuesday heard that some attackers in the Garissa University massacre called dead students by name.

Taking the witness stand as the first prosecution witness in the case against one Tanzanian and four Kenyans suspected to be behind the terror attack, Collins Waliula alluded that the terrorists were area residents as he heard them call names of some students who had been killed.

Waliula who was a student leader at the time, recollected the events of the day saying that the university was in total darkness hours before the attack.

"We reached at the university and found security lights were off, which was unusual. Due to the fact that we were tired, we did not bother to know why they were off. We went straight to sleep," he told the court.

The student leader told Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo that he was rescued by the Kenya Defence Forces at around 8am.

"I left my room and rushed to where the soldiers were, amid more gunshots and that is how I managed to escape. The soldiers later took me to their camp,” he narrated.

The suspects Hassan Aden Hassan, Mohamed Ali Abdikar, Sahal Diriye, Osman Abdi and Rashid Charles, a Tanzanian, are accused of being responsible for the April 2 terror attack that left 147 students dead.

The hearing of the case continues on Wednesday.
