There Will Be no Election in 2017 if Election Laws are Amended – Raila Warns

ODM Leader Raila Odinga has warned that there will be no Elections in 2017 if the current negotiated Election laws are amended.

Speaking in Homa Bay County on Wednesday, Odinga claimed that Jubilee was trying to devise a new way of rigging polls in 2017.

“There'll be no election in 2017 if Jubilee amends negotiated poll laws to re-introduce manual voting: the system is prone to abuse,” the former Prime Minister stated.

Drama erupted in Parliament on Tuesday after CORD MPs blocked Speaker Justin Muturi from accessing the house to ensure amendments to the election laws were not debated.

CORD is opposed to the idea of the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reverting back to manual identification of voters and manual transmission in instances where technology has failed.

The Opposition led by Odinga claims Jubilee is trying to create a loophole in the election laws so that they can tamper with the results.

On the other hand, Jubilee claims the amendments were proposed by the Electoral body and the Opposition was only trying to intimidate them.

Justice and Legal Affairs Committee chairman Samuel Chepkonga claimed the manual system was only a backup plan and it would in no way interfere with the polls.

"This is not my report but that of the IEBC and the amendments came from the meeting the committee held with the commission," Chepkonga stated.
