There Will be No By-elections in Nyeri and Kwale - IEBC States

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given the way forward on how to deal with the vacuum created after the death of Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua and Kwale Senator Boy Juma Boy.

IEBC on Friday explained that the two Counties would not hold any By-Election as it happens upon the demise of any elected leader.

In Kwale, the electoral body observed that it would have unnecessary financial implications to hold a mini-poll since it would be close to the August 8 General Election.

According to IEBC's Electoral Operations Manager Mwaura Kamwati, the process of replacing Juma Boy would take close to 90 days.

This means the new Senator would be elected by end of May which is less than a month before Parliament is dissolved.

It would, therefore, not make sense to use millions in electing a leader to serve for such a short period and still use a similar amount two months later in the August polls.

For Nyeri County, the Constitution dictates that the deputy governor takes over office until the end of the term in case the incumbent governor passes on.

That means that Nyeri's deputy county boss, Samuel Wamathai, will run the county until the resident's cast their votes in the upcoming polls.

Governor Gachagua died on Friday morning while receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer in a London hospital.

On the other hand, Juma Boy passed on two weeks ago in Agha Khan Hospital after a short illness.
