Top Kenyan Trends on January 28, 2017

Here are the top Kenyan trends for Saturday.

#UhuruAtAUSummit

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday morning travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the 28th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly.

During the summit, President Kenyatta will advance some key policy goals, both for Kenya and for the African continent.

He will also participate in the election of the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, where Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed is a candidate.

Dear First Lady

The topic started trending on Saturday morning following an article by Nation Media Group journalist Njoki Chege, who requested First Lady Margaret Kenyatta to intervene in the deteriorating health sector.

In the article, Ms Njoki told the First Lady to suspend the upcoming Beyond Zero Campaign Marathon and use her close proximity to the President to resolve the health crisis.

Kenyans used the platform to share the story as well as urge Mrs Kenyatta to help in the ongoing negotiations to end the doctors' strike which has entered its 55th day.

#Kenya7s

The Kenya Sevens rugby team was the talk of Twitter for the better part of the day as they were participating in the Wellington leg of the annual HSBC series.

The team played its first three matches posting mixed results which attracted divided reactions from a majority of Kenyans.

In the first game, the Shujaas - as they are popularly referred to - narrowly lost 12-17 to Argentina. The team recovered in the subsequent game, hammering Papua New Guinea 47-5.

The excitement was, however, short-lived after the Shujaas lost 12-31 to England in the final group game, knocking them out of the main cup.

While a section of those who weighed in on the performance criticised the team's style of play, many maintained their support for the boys despite the humiliating loss.

#KDFKulbiyow

The hashtag was still top of the trends following an attack on a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) camp in Kulbiyow, Somalia by Al Shabaab militants.

Following the assault, nine soldiers lost their lives while more than 70 militants were killed as the troops bravely fought to protect the base.
