Uhuru Accuses Raila of Playing Central Role in 2007 Post-Election Violence

President Uhuru Kenyatta has accused ODM Party leader Raila Odinga of being at the centre of the 2007/08 post-election violence.

Speaking at a rally in Kisii County on Wednesday, Kenyatta claimed that the Opposition chief played a central role in the chaos that led to the death of more than 1000 people and displacement of hundreds of thousands.

The Head of State told area residents at Nyanturago Stadium that Odinga was the one who ignited the violence that is the worst to be ever experienced in the country.

Ni yeye aliwasha moto (he is the one who sparked the flame)...Raila was at the centre of the 2007 chaos in which Kenyans fought but he blamed it on [William] Ruto,” he claimed.

The violence began after the Opposition, led by Odinga, dismissed results of the contested 2007 Presidential election that was won by former Head of State Mwai Kibaki.

Later, President Kenyatta, Ruto and four other Kenyans were indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on allegations of having a hand in the chaos.

The case took several twists and turns with a majority of the prosecution witnesses withdrawing their testimonies leading to its collapse.

During the proceedings, Jubilee and the Opposition engaged in accusations and counter-accusations with each side blaming the other for Kenyatta and Ruto's indictment.

Odinga at some point was forced to defend himself against claims that he was involved in the prosecution of Ruto, who was at the time of the violence an ardent supporter of ODM.
