Uhuru Appoints Commission for Revenue Allocation Commissioners

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed a close ally of Opposition leader Raila Odinga for a senior position.

Kenyatta, through a Kenya Gazette notice, selected Prof Edward Akong’o Oyugi to the Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA).

The President also replaced six other commissioners of the CRA which was created under the new constitution.

The appointments were made after the term of the Commission's boss Micah Cheserem and other commissioners came to an end in December last year.

Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Kamau Thugge was, however, retained due to his position at the Ministry.

The Commission is mandated with ensuring equitable distribution and allocation of resources between the National and County Governments.

Oyugi is said to be a close friend of the CORD leader having been detained together during the Moi regime.

In the 2013 elections, Prof. Oyugi vied for the Migori gubernatorial seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket but lost to incumbent Okoth Obado who used the less-popular PDP party.

After the polls, he launched a petition to have the results cancelled claiming to have won. At first, the Court of Appeal nullified Obado's election but he was later reinstated by the Supreme Court.

Oyugi, who was the main petitioner, was also ordered to pay all costs of the suit.
