Uhuru Set to Meet KMPDU Officials Today to End Doctors' Strike

President Uhuru Kenyatta is reportedly scheduled to meet the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) officials today at an undisclosed location in Nairobi.

Sources privy to the details of the high-profile meeting divulged that the President resorted to convening the meeting after intensive talks with Catholic Archbishop John Cardinal Njue  and his Anglican counterpart Jackson ole Sapit.

The main objective of the meeting will be to end the doctors' strike which is almost clocking the third month.

In a report by the Nation, Mr Kenyatta on Wednesday held a four-hour meeting with Cardinal Njue and Archbishop Ole Sapit at State House, regarding the industrial action that has caused a crisis in the health sector.

Though the fine details of the meeting with the two religious leaders remain confidential, it is believed that the two convinced the President to meet the medics.

The private meeting with the Head of State comes at a time when the Government has held unsuccessful negotiations with the medics.

The last meeting Kenyatta had with the doctors was at State House Mombasa in December 2016, where he offered them Sh40 billion, which they later rejected.

Earlier, the Court of Appeal directed the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC) to lead the talks between the striking medics and the government.

LSK and KNHRC are expected to submit a report on the progress of the talks to the Court on Thursday.

The doctors have been demanding the implementation of the 2013 Collective Bargaing Agreement (CBA), however, the Government has insisted that it was impossible to do so.
