Uhuru to Visit Tharaka Nithi During Voter Registration Campaign

President Uhuru Kenyatta has made urgent changes to an initial itinerary of his tour of Mt Kenya region that started last week.

The President has now included a visit to Tharaka Nithi County in his schedule, having skipped the region over the weekend causing discord among area leaders.

Kenyatta is expected to land in the county on Thursday for a voter mobilisation campaign and will begin his trip with a stopover at Gatunga market.

The President, who has been traversing different counties in the region, will also address residents at Kathwana, Magutuni, Marimanti, Chuka University shopping centre and Mitheru before finalising the day at Chuka Town.

President Kenyatta is expected to sensitise residents to turn out and enlist as voters in large numbers, as has been his call during the tour.

Last week when the Head of State's itinerary was revealed, Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Muthomi Njuki stated that Kenyatta had been misled not to visit the County, adding that he might suffer consequences during the August 8 election.

He demanded that Kenyatta's schedule be changed, adding that the County had been sidelined for a long time in favour of the greater Meru region.

“We want Uhuru to reschedule his itinerary to include our county in his visit. If we cannot benefit now then he should not come to seek votes in the County,” warned Njuki.

Earlier on, residents had expressed anger with the Jubilee government claiming that the region had not benefited from development projects being launched across the country.

During demonstrations held at Kathwana market the locals threatened to support Opposition leader Raila Odinga in the upcoming polls.
