Details have emerged of the agreement between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi which led to KANU backing his re-election.
Uhuru is said to have agreed with Moi that Jubilee would not field a candidate for the Baringo Senator's seat, a decision that is likely to rub his deputy William Ruto the wrong way.
KANU will also get a number of lucrative parastatal appointments and plum diplomatic slots if Jubilee wins the August elections.
On January 4, Ruto announced that Jubilee would field a candidate to face Moi and even picked Betting Control and Licensing Board member Simon Chelugui to challenge him.
According to sources privy to the matter, Ruto is said to have been left out in the deal that was struck between Kenyatta and the young Moi.
Making the announcement on Thursday, the KANU chairman stated that he had consulted party members widely before Thursday’s NEC meeting.
“I have been consulting Kanu members on what direction we should take and today the NEC deliberated on the matter and settled on the decision to support the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta,” Moi said.
Moi’s decision to support Uhuru deals a major blow to the Opposition leaders who have been courting him to join the National Super Alliance (NASA).
