University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi now claims that his life is in danger following death threats he has reportedly been receiving from unknown people.
Prof Mbithi is said to have recorded a statement with the Police last week on Thursday alleging that some of his students and University staff were plotting to attack him and the institution.
Nairobi Director of Criminal Investigations Nicholas Kamwende confirmed that his officers were probing Mbithi's claims and statements from the VC and all mentioned parties had been recorded.
“The probe will cover many other areas to establish if the confessions made so far are true. We will talk to all concerned parties as part of our probe,” quoted by the Standard.
Police recorded statements from students who backed the allegations by the VC that some goons had been hired to attack the institution over leadership wrangles.
Members of Parliament from Nairobi and Kiambu have been implicated as those supporting a particular candidate in the recent Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) elections, and in return would marshal students to register as voters in their constituents. The said MPs also accused of plotting to oust Mr Mbithi as the Nairobi University VC.
This comes barely a week after UON students destroyed property worth millions and disarrayed an event organised at the institution by the US Embassy and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
The students were protesting a decision by the Varsity to ban cooking in the hostels and also confiscation of their cooking and heating appliances found in the halls of residence.
During the chaos, students vandalised a tent, stole music systems, public address system and burnt other audio-visual equipment that were being used at the event meant to encourage Kenyan youth to register as voters and pledge to refrain from violence.
