Wave Of Health Workers Strikes Now Hits Nairobi

Nurses in Nairobi have told residents to take their sick family members to private hospitals before August 30th as they plan to go on strike on 1st September.

The nurses issued the strike notice on Thursday, saying they will down their tools if the County government does not adress their grievances before then.

Speaking to the press, Kenya National Union of Nurses Nairobi Branch acting secretary Eunice Ngari said, they would proceed with the strike issued by their national General Secretary Seth Panyako.

They said health services would be paralyzed.

This comes even as 11 people have died countrywide following strikes in different parts of the country.

The grievances from the health workers range from salary increments to promotions.

Trans-Nzoia County public health services were on Thursday paralyzed as workers downed their tools to demand over unpaid July salaries.

This is despite the area Governor's insistence that the dues had been deposited to their accounts.

Elsewhere in Nyeri, the Industrial Court declared the on-going medics strike illegal.

The County governmet took the case to court after a meeting between them and the union failed to resolve the stand-off.
