The Kenya National Examination Council has challenged an order by the court to change the name and gender on the academic certificates of a transgender.
The high court had ordered the examinations body to change the name of transgender lady, from Andrew Mbugua to Audrey Mbugua and remove the M (Male) on the gender box.
This was after Mbugua who was thrown into the public limelight when she publicly declared her change of gender sued the body in October last year, saying the inconsistency between her academic papers and her person had rendered her unemployable.
Ruling in her favor, Justice Weldon Korir cited that KNEC had failed to demonstrate why it could not make the changes.
The examination Council however filed a challenge Thursday saying it is unable to make the changes ordered as its machines are preset and cannot produce certificates without the gender box.
