Western Leaders Oppose Sugar Rallies

A section of Western Kenya leaders, led by Kakamega Governor Wyclifffe Oparanya, have termed CORD rallies over the sugar issue in the country as mere politics.

CORD had planned rallies to protest against the supposedly signed sugar deal with Uganda in the Western region to show their solidarity with the sugarcane farmers.

The deal would allow the importation of Ugandan sugar to cover up the deficit supply in the country.

The rallies were set to take place last weekend but they were postponed.

Oparanya has dismissed the rallies as cheap politics and asked CORD to come up with solid measures to help sugarcane farmers in the region.

At the same time Navakholo MP Emmanuel Wangwe criticized the Opposition over the planned rallies, challenging them to use more appropriate channels to address the sugar issue.

He further pointed out that the Opposition had a chance to address the matter in the National Assembly but they failed.

The sugar debate has been a contentious issue for over a month now, and has caused tussles between the Opposition and the Government.
