What You Don't Know About Uchumi's New CEO, Julius Kipng'etich

Dr Julius Kipng'etich was on Tuesday appointed as the new CEO of Uchumi supermarket.

The news of his appointment was confirmed by Uchumi’s spokesperson Kepha Bosire.

Kipng'etich takes over from former CEO Jonathan Ciano’s whose contract was terminated alongside the Chief Finance Officer, Chadwick Okumu and the Human Resources Manager, Michael Kibe over claims of gross misconduct and negligence.

The struggling supermarket poached Kipng'etich from Equity, in an effort to turn its fortunes around following a dismal performance that has seen the supermarket plunge into debt.

Kipng'etich has been credited for the succesful turnaround of the state owned, Kenya Wildlife Service during his 8 year tenure as the CEO.

Business Daily reports that Uchumi's board is banking on his leadership skills to bring the discipline required to change the company.

  • He joined Equity in 2004 as board member and served as the Chief Operating Officer of Equity Group Holdings Limited from 2012.
  • He was the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Wildlife Service from 2004 for 8 years.
  • He served as the Managing Director of Investment Promotion Centre.
  • He is a member of the Kenya Tourism Board.
  • He serves on the Boards of Kenya Forest Service, Police Oversight Board, Moi Girls' Eldoret, Starehe Girls' School, Starehe Boys' Centre, Kenya Tea Development Authority and the Kenya Red Cross Society.
  • He is a member of the Mau Task Force, The Steering Committee for the Marketing of Kenya Stadia, The 1st University Council Member - Management University of Africa.
  • He is also the Patron of AIESEC – University of Nairobi.
  • He is a masters degree holder of Business Administration.
  • He has a Bachelors of Commerce (Accounting option) from University of Nairobi.
