Mobile messaging application WhatsApp, has announced its resolve to cut off services for Nokia and Blackberry phones.
The Facebook-owned app announced that it would end support for BlackBerry (including BlackBerry 10), Windows Phone 7.1, Nokia S40 and Symbian S60 as well as the older Android 2.1 and 2.2 operating systems.
On why it had made the hard-hitting decision, the widely used mobile app cited, in a post on its blog, "While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future".
"This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family, and loved ones using WhatsApp".
The firm also noted that the decline in popularity of Blackberry and Nokia devices among users was to blame for the decision.
WhatsApp Messenger, which enjoys a record one billion user base globally, advised the affected customers to upgrade to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue enjoying the service.
WhatsApp was founded in 2009 and was in February 2014 acquired by social media giant Facebook.
