Why Construction of Kenya-Somalia Border Wall Could Stop

The National Youth Service (NYS) personnel involved in the construction of the Kenya-Somalia border wall have threatened to boycott duty over pay.

The more than 50 workers who complained over delayed payments, have threatened to go back home even after the government promised them allowances of Sh126,000 since the project started in March.

The recruits' efforts to reach the NYS Director Mr Nelson Githinji through the project coordinator Mr Charles Wambugu bore no fruit.

“Our families' survival has been complicated by this situation. Some of our children are out of school due to lack of school fees,” a disgruntled serviceman told the Business Daily.

“We asked to be paid before we left Nairobi but the NYS director told us that some of us would drop out if we were paid. We shall down our tools on Friday and start our journey back home if action is not taken,”

The project funded by the Kenyan Government whose mission is to block Al Shabaab terrorists from entering the country, has been going on for the last six months.

The workers claimed that they had information that their money was already wired to the NYS which is mandated to pay them.

Mr. Wambugu however, could not comment on the matter.
