Why Former President Daniel Moi Met Mama Ngina Kenyatta

It has now emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s mother, Mama Ngina met retired President Daniel Moi on Saturday, at his Kabarak home, Nakuru County to discuss how their two sons can closely work together.

After the meeting, Mama Ngina refused to divulge details of the meeting only stating that “I am here to check on you as a friend.”

However, a senior Jubilee official privy to the meeting and who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the meeting was meant to encourage KANU renew the deal they signed with Jubilee in 2013.

"Gideon and Uhuru will most likely work together this year and towards the future. The meeting by their parents has helped consolidate this desire by their allies," the source told The Star.

According to the deal between KANU and Jubilee, which was signed by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi after the 2013 elections, the former ruling party agreed to support Kenyatta for two terms and support the Jubilee side when matters are brought to the Senate.

On the other hand, Jubilee committed to keeping off Gideon's Baringo Senate seat by not fielding a candidate in the area.

The meeting comes barely a month after Kenyatta called the Baringo Senator and encouraged him not to Join the proposed National Super Alliance (NASA) by Opposition leaders.

Last week, KANU held a meeting and announced that they will make a declaration within two weeks on whether to support NASA or Jubilee in the upcoming polls.

The relationship between Uhuru and Gideon has been strained by the fact that Deputy President William Ruto and the KANU chairman have been fighting for the control of the Rift Valley region.

The Kenyatta and Moi families have enjoyed a strong relationship since the era of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta when he was the first President while Moi was his third vice president for 11 years.

When Mzee passed on in 1978, Moi became the President and went on to mentor the young Uhuru into politics by nominating him to parliament in 2001 and later endorsed him as his successor in 2002.
