Why Police Released Yassin Juma After Dramatic Arrest

Former NTV journalist and blogger Yassin Juma was Monday released from police custody after being arraigned in the Kiambu law courts, where he was not charged owing to faulty charge sheets presented in court.

Mr Juma failed to take a plea because the prosecution had not prepared a proper sheet, while other key court documents were missing. The accused will however, be expected to report to the CID headquarters after two weeks.

The journalist had been transferred from Nairobi to Kiambu, where he was to be charged for misuse of communication gadgets. He was accused of posting on his social media accounts, photos of the Al Shabaab attack at El Adde, Somalia, where dozens of Kenyan troops perished.

According to the Occurrence book 52/23/01/2016, Mr Juma's phone was confiscated because of the alleged misuse of the gadget.

Upon his release, Juma posted on his social media account rejoicing and thanking Kenyans for their unwavoured support.

Ooh Ooh Kanu Yajenga Nchi, Ooh Ooh Kanu Yajenga Nchi, Kanu Eeh Kanu Yajenga Nchi Sad that We are slowly and steadily going back to the Kanu Era,” said the journalist on a Facebook post. (Am Free at last. Thank You Everyone For your support. I appreciate all your efforts following my arrest and detention".)

He further explained why together with his friends, they waved their index fingers in a photograph he posted online after his release.

"And for those asking what the index finger stands for, it is a sign used to indicate the oneness of God and that our tribulations in this world can only be solved by that one good Lord," he wrote.

Mr Juma was arrested on Saturday at his Donholm residence in Nairobi at around 8pm, by eight officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters and was taken to the Muthaiga Police Station.
