Ex-NTV Journalist Yassin Juma Arrested After Leaving Hospital

Former NTV Journalist and Blogger Yassin Juma was Sunday grilled by police detectives over contentious information regarding the attack on a Kenya Defence Forces camp in El-Adde, Somalia.

Mr Juma stated that he was arrested on Saturday at his Donholm residence in Nairobi at around 8pm by eight officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters and was taken to the Muthaiga Police Station.

“I was from the hospital when I was arrested by eight police officers in two cars...They took me to my house where they conducted a search before they escorted me to the police station,” he told Nation at the police station.

According to police, the former Journalist was arrested following his regular updates on Facebook and Twitter about the Al Shabaab attack which left an unknown number of soldiers dead.

In his house,  the officers are said to have ransacked his property, checked through his laptop and then confiscated flash disks.

Mr Juma noted that he had not been informed the charges facing him,  however, an entry in the Occurrence Book, OB 52/23/01/2016, indicates that he is accused of “misuse of communication gadgets.”

Yassin Juma's arrest comes after a stern warning from Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery against sharing information deemed to further Al-Shabaab’s fear-mongering agenda.

A report by the Star indicates that the blogger was being trailed by Anti-Terror Police Unit officers three days before his arrest on January 23 and he could be arraigned in court on Monday.

The arrest sparked outrage among Kenyans prompting an online petition for the blogger's release under the hashtag #FreeYassinJuma.

Last week, on Tuesday, a man was charged at a Kiambu court for allegedly posting photos of Kenyan soldiers who were perished in the January 15 attack on an AMISOM base in El-Adde, Gedo.
