Why Ugandans Might Stop Using KQ

Ugandan citizens could stop using the national carrier Kenya Airways following allegations of extortion.

On Tuesday, Members of Parliament of Uganda had a debate highlighting how KQ was taking advantage of being the major link between Kampala and Nairobi.

They, therefore, called on Ugandans to boycott KQ services until the travel costs were revised.

According to Jinja West MP Moses Grace Balyeku, the airline's ticket prices were exorbitant considering the distance between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Entebbe.

The debate was introduced by the outspoken MP who claimed that the distance was too short to warrant the high charges by KQ.

“The government should come in as the airline exploits Ugandans by charging high travel costs despite Kenya being a member of the East African Community,” said Balyeku.

The lawmaker further stated that it was a matter of national concern given that most Ugandans depended on Kenya Airways since they did not have their own national carrier.

Kenya Airways operates eight flights between Entebbe and Nairobi charging Sh22,800 (US$225) per trip.

The legislators, however, blamed their leaders for not reviving the country's national airline which collapsed in the 90s.
