Five girls are reported to have escaped from their home in Kacheliba, West-Pokot County, and embarked on a three day journey which ended in Pokot South, after their parents planned to marry them off.
According to Kapyogen Chief Elijah Lomuton, the girls aged between 10 and 14 years were rescued by a good samaritan on Wednesday evening, who found them stranded at Chepkono Centre.
Lomuton condemned the act by the parents stating: "This is violation of children's rights. The girls are too young to be married off".
The chief further indicated that they were in liason with officers from the girls' village to ensure that their parents were brought to book.
"The parents must be arrested and prosecuted since our Constitution does not allow early forced marriages," Chief Lomuton was quoted by the Standard.
