IG Boinnet Orders Mututho to Expose University Drug Gangs

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Thursday ordered National Authority for Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) Chairman John Mututho to name officers shielding drug gangs at the University of Nairobi following his previous allegations.

In a statement, Boinnet rubbished claims by the NACADA Chairman, who insinuated that the recent students' unrest at the varsity was caused by rival drug gangs that enjoy the protection of senior police officers.

Boinnet instructed Mututho to record a statement at the nearest police station and provide facts to his claims.

“We therefore wish to invite Mr Mututho to avail to the nearest Police Station the names of the senior officers he alleges protect the criminal gangs for action,” Boinnet said.

The IG further warned that reckless statements aimed at tarnishing the image of the Police Service will not be tolerated.

Boinnet called on the public to provide information on unethical or criminal conduct practices carried out by his officers.

On Wednesday, Mututho associated the recent chaos witnessed at the University of Nairobi with a drug cartel that had been operating in the institution's hostels.

The NACADA boss claimed that he was aware of close to 20 dealers who had been supplying drugs to students, causing them to engage in violent acts which led to destruction of property and injuries on some learners.

The students went on a rampage over alleged rigging in the recently concluded Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) elections.
