President Uhuru Kenyatta Mourns Bethuel Mareka Gecaga

President Uhuru and his family are in mourning after information of the death of his close relative reached them on Wednesday.

Bethuel Mareka Gecaga, the father-in-law of Kenyatta's sister - Jeni Wambui Gecaga - passed away as he was receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

Though details of his illness remain undisclosed, President Kenyatta eulogised BM Gecaga as a "true patriot who was one of the architects of building Kenya’s economy after independence".

“Dr Gecaga was right there among the iconic figures who worked to develop our country and grow our economy. His death is a big blow to his family and those who knew him,” Mr Kenyatta condoled with the family.

The 92-year-old is the father to Udi and Mary (Noni) Gecaga. He is also a grandfather to Jomo Gecaga, who is also the President's Personal Secretary (PA).

BM Gecaga served as General Manager and Chairman at the British American Tobacco for 28 years. He also worked at the Nation Media Group, Industrial Development Bank, Commercial Bank of Africa and Kenya Airways.

The deceased headed the University of Nairobi Governing Council for 16 years.

His wife, the late Jemimah Gecaga, was the first woman nominee at the Legislative council.

Mr Kenyatta concluded by noting: "The late Gecaga remained accessible and humble, offering words of wisdom and leadership skills to those who needed them."
