It has now emerged that Former Presidents Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki are blocked from voting in the General Election since their ID cards have been used to register other people.
Mwaki Kibaki's ID number 0000002 –has been used to register 8 people namely Gitonga Wilson, Kanja Julius Ngede Kihinge, Evans Kariuki Kirinya, Victoria Gatwiri, Mu Ko Mugara, Duncan Muia, Mbinya Wanjiru, and Caroline Nduta.
All the eight people have been assigned unique identification numbers in the BVR system and when keyed in, the former president's ID number is not registered as his.
On the other hand, Mr Moi’s ID number 0000001 – has been used to register one Joseph Marrion Nchabani, indicated to have been born on January 1, 1968.
Mr Kibaki’s spokesperson, Mr Gituku Ngare, stated that the revelations were alarming and urged the electoral body to correct the abnormally with immediate effect.
“The people who are receiving those ID numbers and registering people using them are to blame first because of their idiocy. It is common sense that such rare numbers can only be used by VIPs. I am alarmed,” Mr Ngare said.
Moi’s spokesman Mr Lee Njiru, described the use of the former president’s ID number as unfortunate.
There have been concerns that the registration system has been manipulated after numerous claims of double registration emerged.
