IEBC Announces Dates for Verification of Biometric Voter Registration Details

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday announced dates for confirmation of biometric voter registration details.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the elections body stated that the voter verification would commence on 11th May 2017 and run until 9th June 2017.

In regards to the diaspora (Burundi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda) the Commission noted that the verification exercise would kick off from 15th May to 30th May.

"The biometric voter verification process is provided for in section 6A (i) of the Elections Act which mandates the Commission to open the Register of Voters for verification of biometric data for a period of 30 days.

"As such, the Commission wishes to announce that biometric voter verification will commence on 11th of May 2017 to 09th of June 2017 and 15 to 30 May 2017 for those in the diaspora," IEBC's statement read in part.

The polls agency also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that the exercise was well conducted stating that 10,000 gadgets had been delivered across the country unlike 2013 where verification machines were received too close to the polling day.

The Commission further explained that it had trained its staff on the Kenya Integrated Election Management System ( KIEMS ) gadgets that will be used for the verification process and guaranteed Kenyans of a smooth process.

The elections body, however, emphasised that the exercise was only for registered Kenyan voters and that there was no window for new voter registration until after the General Election is over.

"We wish to underscore that this process is only for those Kenyans that registered to vote. There is no window to register as a new voter until after the General Election is over," IEBC stated.

The Commission concluded its statement by urging Kenyans to visit nearby polling stations to confirm their details and familiarise themselves with the technology that would be used in the General Election.
