President Jomo Kenyatta Threatened to Beat Vice President Joseph Murumbi

Kenya's founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was believed to have been a disciplinarian so much so that he would threaten to personally beat Ministers who would offend him.

At one point he threatened to beat his then Vice President, Joseph Murumbi after a verbal altercation.

“He threatened to beat me one day. But I walked out of his office and banged the door when I disagreed with him,” Murumbi revealed in his book A Path Not Taken: The Story of Joseph Murumbi that was published by Alan Donovan.

Murumbi, who was Kenya's second Vice President, narrates that after walking out on Mzee Kenyatta he was worried that he would be fired for the daring act.

“And I went to my office and was just waiting for a call: ‘Joe, you are sacked,’” he added.

But that did not happen perhaps showing a kinder side to the president.

The second vice president of Kenya would later apologise to Kenyatta at the parliament buildings where they came to face-to-face after the said altercation.

After expressing regret for his act, Murumbi narrates that the President responded by saying: “If you do that again, I will beat you… I appreciate your coming and apologizing.”
