The Kenya Red Cross has issued a statement after reports emerged that police had received a huge donation of disaster preparedness equipment, including body bags, ahead of Tuesday's General Election.

On Monday, Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Abbas Gullet refuted claims that the society had provided body bags and other medical equipment to the Police.

"The Kenya Red Cross Society would like to state categorically that at no time did it supply any first aid kits, medical equipment or body bags to the police in Kisumu, or to any other person or institution,” the statement read.

Mr Gullet affirmed that Kenya Red Cross operates within strict fundamental principles of impartially, neutrality, independence, adding that the organization had no alignment to any group, political party or political opinion.

"We take this opportunity to urge Kenyans to maintain peace during and after the elections tomorrow,” he concluded.

Earlier on, police in Kisumu confirmed they had received a major donation of disaster preparedness equipment including body bags from a local non-governmental organization, Malteser International.

The items that included First Aid kits, gloves, stretchers, 200 body bags and other emergency materials were received by the Administration Police Commander, Joseph Keitany, causing tension among the Kisumu residents.

The items are meant to assist the security officers in case violence breaks out.
