KFCB Boss Ezekiel Mutua Bans Kenyan Lesbian Movie Rafiki

Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) boss Ezekiel Mutua on Friday announced that the government had banned the 'Rafiki' movie produced in Kenya, with a lesbian theme.

In a presser at the institution's government offices, Mutua noted: "Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya and donors and other development partners are advised to ensure that the content they finance complies with the law.

"We would like to sound a warning that foreign agencies that are involved in the promotion of films in Kenya must respect our culture and desist from funding content that undermined the sensibilities of the Kenyan people," added Mutua.

Mutua asserted that Rafiki has a homosexual theme, which according to him, is an intent to promote lesbianism in the country which is contrary to the law.

"Rafiki, contains homosexual scenes that are against the law, the culture and the moral values of the Kenyan people. The film seeks to overtly promote lesbianism.

"Section 7 of CAP222 requires that the license holder applies in writing if any alterations or addition to the text, synopsis or scenes are to be made. Rafiki flouted this provision," Mutua told journalists.

However, he noted that the ban followed consultations among various stakeholders, among them the movie's film director, Ms Wanuri Kahiu.

He further divulged that Ms Wanuri had written to the board on Wednesday requesting a ruling to be made over the original version of the movie.

On her part, Ms Wanuri tweeted: "I am incredibly sorry to announce that our film RAFIKI has been banned in Kenya. We believe adult Kenyans are mature and discerning enough to watch local content but their right has been denied. #Cannes2018 #AKenyanFirst."

Mutua affirmed that any content that undermines the institution of family, which is recognised in the Constitution as the basic unit of society will be resisted.
