Brookside Rolls Out Free Milk Project to Nairobi Schools

Milk processor Brookside on Tuesday announced that it had reached an agreement with 300 schools in Nairobi to provide free milk for pupils.

Brookside’s Marketing Director Oliver Mary indicated that about 200,000 pupils, between 6 and 12 years, would benefit from the program which will be started in other counties later in the year.

“Our school program seeks to educate pupils and teachers about the impact of dairy products in promoting a healthy lifestyle and effective dieting,” he noted during the launch.

He further mentioned that the dairy company is targeting schools in a bid to increase the consumption of dairy products.

“This is not a marketing strategy, it is not meant to boost our market share. It is the program’s initiative to boost knowledge about dieting,” he emphasized.

The programme dubbed ‘3 Dairies a Day’ will use "edu-tainment" inform of cartoons to educate children on nutrition.

In December 2017, the company signed a deal with Walt Disney Productions allowing the use of its cartoon characters on milk packets.

The project by the milk processor comes after findings indicated that there is increased malnutrition in children aged between 5 and 12 years.

The research done by the University of Nairobi (UON) also showed that malnourished kids have diminished learning capacity and low productivity in adulthood.

The study further showed that children under five years are at a higher risk of suffering from malnutrition than others.
