KNUT Wants Non-Local Teachers Transferred From Marsabit Over Insecurity

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Tuesday issued a statement following the hospitalization of six non-local teachers in Marsabit after they were seriously beaten by students.

KNUT Marsabit Secretary-General Lufle Gambare called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to immediately transfer non-local teachers from the county over the growing insecurity.

“We condemn the incident in the strongest terms possible, we have not heard of anything like this in the history of Marsabit. We want all of the non-local teachers including primary schools teachers transferred from the region,” he told the press.

Gambare asserted that the students could not have acted on their own as he accused unnamed people of orchestrating the incident.

In addition, Gambare questioned why the the local community in Marsabit had failed to speak out against the attack and declare support for the teachers.

“We are sure the students could not have acted on their own capacity and we know there are people who used them. We want all involved to be brought to face the law,” he stated.

One of the teachers was reported to be in a critical condition following the assault by students of Chalbi Boys High School.

According to Maikona Deputy Commissioner Stephen Kavulu, learning was interrupted as learners ran teachers out of their classes in the morning.

He was, however, unable to explain what could have triggered the shocking attack.

"No arrests have been made because the students saw the police lorry approaching and ran away.

"The attackers only told the teachers it was their day, but we are yet to establish the reason behind the attacks," Kavulu stated.
