6 Teachers Hospitalized After Beating by Students from Chalbi High School in Marsabit

Six non-local teachers at Chalbi Boy High School were hospitalized after receiving a thorough beating from students in Marsabit County.

One of the tutors is reported to be in critical condition following the Monday morning attack.

Confirming the incident, Maikona Deputy County Commissioner Stephen Kavulu stated that attack disrupted the morning classes as students pursued the teachers out of class.

"No arrests that have been made because the students saw the police lorry approaching and ran away. The attackers only told the teachers it was their day, but we are yet to establish the reason behind the attack," he was quoted by the Nation.

On his part, Marsabit County education director Milton Nzioka disclosed that the school has been closed indefinitely.

Though rare, cases of students attacking teachers have been reported in the past.

Earlier in June 2017, a school in Samburu County was closed after pupils attacked and injured teachers.

Kirimoni Primary School pupils descended on their teachers with clubs and machetes protesting against punishment from female teachers.

They were reported to have injured two female teachers in the process.

The students defended their actions citing five major reasons that led to the attack including too many suspensions, verbal abuse from the teachers and being turned away when trying to consult.

They also claimed that the teachers were making them fail in their examinations, despite their hard work, something that was frustrating them.

Boys at the school further accused their female teachers of harassing them though did not clearly state how that was being done.

Following the humiliating beating, teachers from the school vowed not to resume duties claiming their lives were at risk and have urged Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i to transfer them.
