President Uhuru Kenyatta is on Monday night scheduled to have a meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington D.C.
According to Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, talks between the two leaders would centre on five key areas of development in Kenya and the East Africa region.
The five agenda items were listed as security, governance, infrastructure, democracy and trade.
"The relationship is historic and it’s an opportunity to strengthen the bilateral relations covering areas of trade, security and infrastructure.
"We knew that this would happen, so we started our preparations many weeks ago. Up to now, I have held about 10 inter-ministerial meetings in preparations to present our policy paper," CS Juma revealed in a press statement from D.C.
On trade, the CS revealed that Uhuru and his team would be seeking to discuss the future of the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (Agoa) which is set to expire in 2025.
"We are proposing the formation of joint teams to review the partnership after 2025. This is to ensure that African countries continue to benefit from this important cooperation," she stated.
State House further confirmed that CS Juma and Trade Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo had already held bilateral talks with US Trade representative Robert Lighthizer.
"Lighthizer and Juma talks particularly focused on the need to optimise opportunities available under Agoa.
"We also held fruitful deliberations with Gil Kaplan, the under-secretary for commerce, on the participation of US companies in the Big Four agenda," PS Kiptoo told reporters.
State House acting Spokesperson Kanze Dena also released the president's itinerary for his official visit to the US.
