Male Senators Wear White Headgear in Parliament to Show Support for Gender Rule Bill

A section of male Senators on Tuesday wore headscarfs in support of raising awareness on the gender rule in Parliament.

Senators Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi ), Kipchumba Murkomen (Elgeyo Marakwet) and James Orengo of Siaya wore white headgear to show support for the 2/3 gender rule, a similar move to that of their female counterparts.

Murkomen took to Twitter to showcase his new headgear.

This comes a month after a group of female Members of Parliament took to the House wearing similar head wraps that their male counterparts found strange.

The female lawmakers claimed that the white gear was a sign of solidarity with the aim to have the Gender Bill passed by parliament.

Concern was raised by Majority Leader of the National Assembly Aden Duale questioning Speaker Justin Muturi on whether the leaders were in order to be in white scarfs.

The speaker disregarded the claims raised by some of the male leaders pointing out that they had not breached the dress code rule.

“They look very smart, we should congratulate them… We are not going to entertain points of order on non-issues about headgear, however, you choose to dress… let us allow the members who have chosen to have some form of elegance on their heads be as they choose to, it does not offend our rules,” remarked Muturi.

Veteran MP Jimmy Angwenyi insinuated that the showing by the female leaders meant that male lawmakers could attend sessions while in their caps.

The male legislators were told to get used to the new look as it would be a routine by the female MPs every Wednesday.
