Nurses Union Secretary General Seth Panyako Arrested Over Incitement

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary General Seth Panyako was on Monday taken into custody by the police.

It was revealed that Mr Panyako was arrested because he was in support of the ongoing nurses strike at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Several other nurses, who were protesting his arrest, were also taken into custody.

This followed a report by the KNH security boss Manase Mukhwana who told the police that Mr Panyako did not have the required permits to carry out a strike.

"He is an outsider, hence, cannot come here to cause disruption at the hospital when nurses are at work," stated Mukhwana as reported by The Star.

The nurses downed their tools following the recent assault by a patient’s relative on a nurse in that hospital.

They claimed that the hospital’s management did not take any action and that they are not informed about the status of her treatment.

The nurses also blamed the management of infringing their rights of belonging in a national union.

The nurse had previously been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit section of the hospital after being attacked by a patient's relative for allegedly delivering bad news about the passing of her son.
